Introduction

The PCL in General Medicine, also known as the Health Assistant (HA) program, is a comprehensive three-year diploma-level course designed to produce competent mid-level healthcare professionals capable of providing preventive, promotive, diagnostic, curative, and rehabilitative services.

This program plays a crucial role in strengthening Nepal’s healthcare system, especially in rural and underserved areas where Health Assistants are often the first point of medical contact.

Program Objectives

  • To develop competent health professionals who can provide primary medical care in health posts, primary health care centers, and hospitals.
  • To train students in clinical diagnosis, treatment of common diseases, minor surgeries, and emergency care.
  • To strengthen knowledge and skills in public health, community medicine, and health promotion.
  • To prepare graduates who are capable of working in both clinical and community-based settings.

Career Opportunities

Upon completion of the course and licensing by the Nepal Health Professional Council (NHPC), graduates can work as:

  • Health Assistants (HA) in government and private hospitals, health posts, and primary health care centers
  • Medical Officers' Assistants in clinical practice
  • Public Health Officers in NGOs/INGOs
  • Emergency Care Providers in rural health settings
  • Community Health Coordinators

They can also pursue Bachelor’s degrees in Public Health (BPH), Bachelor in Health Education, Bachelor in Nursing (for eligible candidates), or MBBS (if they meet criteria).
